Nathaniel STANDERWICK was a Nathaniel, born around 1695, came from the area of Somerset around Ilminster, where several generations of the family existed from the 15th to the early 20th centuries. Many of them were involved in the Somerset woolen industry, and Nathaniel himself began as a weaver. He had moved to the Bourton area by 1720 and began a linen manufacturing business. This later diversified into bed-tick manufacturing, in which his 3 sons (James, Nathaniel & William) were involved. A wholesale warehouse was established in London and the eldest son moved there and began selling direct to the London market (this caused a lot of resentment in the trade as it cut out the middlemen).1
