Marriage* | 12 January 1790 | She married James LAPHAM, son of James LAPHAM and Ann BRIXEY, on 12 January 1790 at St John the Baptist, Frome, Somerset, England. Banns for the marriage of James LAPHAM 'of this parish, sojourner' and Elizabeth Pitman 'of Witham Friary' were called in Stourton on 12 & 26 Jul and 2 Aug 1789. However, they were married in Frome five months later. Their children were considered illegitimate, but it is not clear to my why this was so. Under the Hardwicke Marriage Act, at least one party had to be resident in the parish of marriage for at least a month, and banns had to be called in the parish to which each party belonged. Perhaps the Rector of Kilmington decided that the Frome marriage was invalid. Or perhaps James had been married before.2 |
